Chapter 8

Rome

"Dearan," I call out, trying to keep my voice steady. My heart pounds in my chest, the image of his panicked expression from last night still fresh in my mind. "I need to speak with you."

There's a moment of silence that seems to stretch into eternity before his voice filters through the thick wood. "I'm not feeling well. I'm staying in my room today."

His words hit me like a physical blow. The finality in his tone, the clear dismissal, it all sends a pang of regret through me. I lean against his door, my forehead resting against the cool wood.

"Dearan," I start, my words a mere whisper. "I...I didn't mean to...to..." I trail off, unable to find the words to express the chaos of emotions churning inside me.

When no response comes, I push away from the door, a renewed sense of failure settling in. "Dearan, I'm...I'm sorry," I murmur, unsure if he can even hear me.

'I failed him,' I think to myself, turning away from his door. The words are a cold comfort against the storm of regret and fear brewing within me.

'But I won't fail him again.' My mind is made up. I need to confess to the king, to tell him about my failure. The thought is daunting, but it's what needs to be done. I dress in my armor, each piece a physical reminder of the duty and honor I owe to my kingdom, to my king.

I draw in a deep breath, steeling myself for the inevitable confession. I can do this. I have to do this. The king deserves to know.

I'm just about to step out of my quarters, my mind running through the right words to say, when the door bursts open. Jefrey stands there, panting and wide-eyed. His disheveled appearance, the panic in his eyes, the urgency of his voice, are all signs of trouble.

"Rome," he gasps, doubling over in an attempt to catch his breath. "The town center...there's been an attack. We're needed."

All thoughts of confession, of my own personal turmoil, are shoved to the back of my mind. The Alpha in me takes over, my body moving on instinct. I grip Jefrey's arm, steadying him as I take in his words.

"Get your gear," I say, my voice a low growl. "We'll head out immediately."

As we rush out of my quarters, heading towards the unfolding chaos, I cast a fleeting glance at the corridor leading to Dearan's rooms. The thought of him alone adds a new layer of urgency to my actions.

My confession would have to wait. Right now, my kingdom needs me. And so does Dearan, whether he knows it or not.

We sprint through the castle corridors, the clamor of alarm bells ringing in the distance. It's a harsh, discordant melody that sets my nerves on edge. As we burst onto the balcony overlooking the town center, I feel my heart drop into my stomach.

Enemy soldiers. A sea of them, their banners a dark stain against the once-peaceful cityscape. They're much nearer than I'd expected, their sinister ranks spread out like a deadly wave ready to crash over us.
